Prairie dog ruling decided by state The Spectrum & Daily News September 14, 2009
In a precedent-setting ruling, landowner Bruce Hughes was awarded the appeal to Iron County and the state regarding his property value appraisal since his land is covered in prairie dogs and arguably worth less than originally appraised.
Im still stunned about the decision, Hughes said. I can live with it. I am absolutely shocked that they took this seriously.
However, the county and Hughes still have the option to appeal the decision within the next 30 days, said Charlie Roberts, public information officer for the Utah State Tax Commission.
It would be inappropriate for us to comment at this time since both parties still have 30 days to appeal the decision, he said.
Hughes said he is pleased and surprised with the decision made by the state.
It was a fair decision and courageous of the state that they faced it head on and came to a reasonable solution.
